Ieuan Jones appointed as the new MD of CAPMC

Updated: Jul 10, 2018

After 16 years David Last has decided to relinquish his position as Musical Director of the Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir. During this period David has guided the choir forward from a small group of about 25 choristers to it’s current successful position of almost 80. David summarised his long period in charge by saying:

“I have been privileged and extremely proud to lead the choir since April 2001, and will miss having the choir and its members as such a big part of my life moving onwards. I have taken over a thousand rehearsals and led the choir in nearly 500 engagements. There have been so many accomplishments during this period, with the highlights including the tours and the massed choir concerts, and all of these would have been impossible to achieve without the support and belief of the committee members and choristers. So many people have supported me, and words are not enough to express my gratitude to you all.

My job has been made immeasurably easier and more enjoyable by the other members of the musical team, Mary, Joe, Kirsten, Jo and Ieuan. A number of others have helped out on occasions as well, and the choir has always been welcoming and supportive of them.

Of course, a choir is nothing without its choristers. I think there are only seven remaining from when I started, underlining the change that the choir has gone through. I thank you all, old or new.

I will always be proud to be associated with the most friendly and welcoming of choirs. The choir brings joy to so many people through its music and camaraderie and I am confident that it will continue to do so for another fifty years and more.”

The committee would like to wholeheartedly thank David for his massive contribution over the 16 years and he knows that he will be called upon to contribute his outstanding musical talents in many future events.

Ieuan Jones has been appointed as David’s successor. Ieuan has been with the choir for 5 years as Assistant Accompanist so he is well aware of the standards set by David and the commitment required to manage the busiest male choir in Wales.

Originally from Anglesey, Ieuan moved to Cardiff to study music at the University of Cardiff, where he received an honours degree. During his studies, he became an organ scholar at Dewi Sant church and is now Musical Director and choirmaster there.

Ieuan is a busy accompanist for many soloist and choirs, including Côr Heol-y-March, Morriston Orpheus Choir, Côrdydd, and of course Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir. During the last ten years he has enjoyed considerable success at numerous choir competitions, including Children’s Choir of the World at Llangollen, and Choir of Wales on S4C’s Côr Cymru.

As an accompanist Ieuan has travelled Great Britain extensively and also toured Ireland, France, Belgium and New York where he performed at Carnegie Hall. His other musical interests include playing the ukulele, and entertaining audiences with his talent as a yodeller.

We wish Ieuan success in his new position.
