A Brief History of Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir

The choir was formed in 1966 as the Cardiff Athletic Club Male Voice Choir, following a chance remark on the standard of after-match singing in the clubhouse. A group of dedicated supporters got together on a Monday evening to take the lead in improving the singing in the clubhouse. It was not long before the number of choristers increased and the reputation of the choir started to grow, bringing requests for performances for local groups and charities.

Over the years, the choir has established links with organisations in England, Scotland, Ireland and France, as well as within the Principality. This leads to a very hectic schedule of concerts and tours.

In 2000, the choir changed their name to become the Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir.

The choir has been seen on BBC, Sky Sports, ITV, Channel 4, New Zealand and Australian TV, including a live performance on BBC1´s Grandstand.

Since the choir´s formation, they have raised thousands of pounds for local and national charities, and entertained tens of thousands of people.

The choir celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2006 with a series of events, including a four nations tour and a massed male choral spectactular in St David´s Hall, Cardiff.  This has become a regular event, with similar concerts being held in 2009 and 2011 under the title AngloWelsh Festival of Male Choirs.

The choir has travelled to Germany, with performances in Heilbronn, Satteldorf and Stuttgart, France (Strasbourg, Lorient, Chatte, Pleyben, Clermont Ferrand), Poland (Plzen, Krakow, Auschwitz), Scotland (Crieff, Perth, Edinburgh), Switzerland, Italy and Spain (Santander).

Future plans include the London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs (formerly known as ‘1000 Voices’) at the Royal Albert Hall on October 18th 2014.
